Research

The UC San Diego Lupus Center has aligned a broad group of research collaborators including epidemiologists, statisticians, and basic science researchers from UC San Diego, as well as biotechnology and pharmaceutical partners, other research institutes, and lupus researchers from other University of California campuses. With clinical trial opportunities and collaborative research programs focusing on wellness, diet, and exercise, patients may be able to participate actively in finding treatments and preventing damage from SLE.

While rheumatologists have an armamentarium of treatments used to treat lupus, many of these medications come with side effects and are not always well-tolerated. Clinical trials are ongoing at the Lupus Center to discover new treatments for SLE and lupus nephritis that are better tolerated and effective.
