Dr. Bertin received his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, Nice, France where he studied the cellular and molecular events associated with a gene therapy strategy for metastatic colon cancer with Dr. Pierrefite-Carle. His publication record and his academic achievements allowed him to obtain a Fulbright scholarship and a research fellowship from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) to pursue his training in the US. He then completed his post-doctoral training in immunology at UCSD with Dr. Eyal Raz during which he studied study T cell signaling and intestinal inflammation in models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). During his postdoc, Dr. Bertin notably explored the role of certain Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) ion channels such as TRPV1 in models of IBD and colon cancer. His investigations in this field resulted in publications in high-impact journals including one in Nature Immunology, and he was awarded a Research Fellowship Award and a Career Development Award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Dr. Bertin then transitioned to an Assistant Project Scientist position and is now starting his independent research career in the field of inflammation and cancer as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCSD.
The Bertin lab is culturally diverse and includes Postdocs, Visiting Scholars, and undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. Since he joined UCSD, Dr. Bertin has supervised numerous Postdoc fellows and Visiting Scholars. He has also trained undergraduate students and graduate students as part of the BS/MS program through the BISP 199 who have obtained their M.S. degree, authored publications, and successfully got into Medical School, Ph.D. programs, or Biotech jobs.
